The SMILE Horizon 2020 project, led by a consortium of 13 partners from the EU and Canada, supports ‘ageing in place’ for older adults with severe health conditions through digital solutions. The project addresses societal and health challenges arising from demographic change and population ageing.
Through our work in living labs across Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Canada, we actively engage with frail senior citizens (including those with COPD, dementia, or in post-surgery recovery) and their formal (e.g., health and social care personnel) and informal caregivers (e.g., family and friends).
This approach ensures a patient-centric understanding of needs and preferences for in-home care. Based on older people’s feedback, we co-create personalized digital solutions alongside existing e-health innovations, forming our Smart Inclusive Living Environments (SMILE). As our project nears its completion, engaging policymakers is crucial to address important policy considerations that can further enable the successful digitalization of elderly care
Building on earlier webinars with the International Federation on Ageing (IFA) and partners in our Digital Solutions Catalogue, the SMILE Consortium invites local, national, and regional policymakers to share examples of successful e-health policies and their implementation. Through this important discussion, the consortium aims to better understand the impact of digital solutions on elderly care. This includes increasing quality of life, independent living, and easing the burden on the healthcare systems and families. The consortium also wants to discuss the significance of learning from innovative projects like SMILE to inform policy decisions and directions.
